Wirksworth Horizon was an installation for the 2009 Wirksworth Festival. It comprised 360 LEDs fixed to buildings surrounding the square. All the lights are on the same horizontal plane. Viewed from around the market square the lights appeared as discrete sequences of lights attached to individual buildings.
But from the top of the square the lights became a single encircling line that defined the (usually hidden) horizon.
The illusion was to the sea, where the horizon is always apparent, not only now, but at the time when this limestone landscape was formed.
